The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-profit NGO. The FSC represents an internationally recognised forestry certification. The purpose of this certification is correct management of forests and the traceability of products deriving from them. The FSC logo guarantees that a product has been manufactured from raw materials taken from forests which are correctly managed in accordance with two main standards: forestry management and chain of custody.
For a company, obtaining ISO certifications is a recognition of its quality – ISO 9001 was first published in 1987, revised for the first time in 1994 and substantially revised in 2000, with the last update coming in 2008 (ISO 9001:2008), and acknowledged in the same year by the Italian standards organisation UNI (UNI EN ISO 9001:2008); this standard sets out the requirements for an organisation’s quality management system. The requirements are of a “general nature” and can be implemented by any kind of organisation.
ISO 14001 certification is not obligatory, but is rather the choice of a company or organisation which has decided to establish, implement, maintain or improve an internal environmental management system. It is also important to remember that ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that the certified organisation has a management system able to keep control over the environmental impacts of its activities and is systematically seeking out improvements in a consistent, effective and, above all, sustainable manner.
